Updated Mazda CX-5
Mazda is one brand that has not been doing very well locally. The brand has technology leading splendid products. There was a time when Mazda was the official brand in Zimbabwe. Willowvale Motor Industries (WMI) faces crippling collapse due to a combination of hostile factors that include the prevailing harsh economic environment, reduction of protective duties, as well as the removal of exchange control safeguards — all of which have left the hitherto thriving automobile company on its knees. Most of all it needs the shareholders to pour money into the business. They surely can import knocked down kits and start re-assembling again. WMI is no longer producing cars — it stopped in 2012 when production plunged to below 4 000 from a peak of 18 000 vehicles per year in 1997.
Imagine if they were to produce the Mazda CX-5, a stylish, spacious and dynamic SUV model that accounts for approximately one-third of the company’s global unit sales! It has received a significant update. The global roll out of the updated CX-5 started at the end of 2021.
All we can do is review this delightful vehicle whilst we wait and hope for WMI, the sleeping giant, to rise again.
The first-generation Mazda CX-5 debuted in 2011 and had a full model change in 2017. The combined sales of these two generations have totaled more than three million units worldwide to date and won the hearts of many customers.
This major update includes an evolution of Mazda’s award-winning KODO design, with revised front and rear bumper designs combined with new headlight and tailgate clusters, giving the Mazda CX-5 a distinctly more modern and sharper look. Other changes include improvements to the design, dynamics performance, utility and convenience elements of the CX-5 and produce a greater sense of quality, both in appearance and the driving experience.
Exterior Design
The exterior is infused with a feeling of strength surged from the precisely designed form when light hit its surface. Focusing on the front and rear ends, the updated design creates a distinguished and elegant appearance.
Mazda designers focused on refining the front and rear ends, opting to minimize character lines in favour of reflective body surfaces that create a distinguished and elegant appearance. The front adopts a new bumper and new signature wing that extends outward from the front grille, which is also updated with a three-dimensional texture. The rear features a new bumper and tailgate. The headlights and taillights receive significant design changes with each lamp featuring a pair of horizontally spaced, rectangular LED lights that create a sleek, eye-catching expression. Adaptive LED headlamps now include 20 segment LED arrays to provide brighter illumination and enhanced visibility. The CX-5 also received newly design alloy wheels.
Interior Design
The updated seat design helps to stabilize occupants’ heads more, this lessens the amount and speed of forward, backward, and sideways head movement, making it easier for drivers to maintain a stable line of sight. Optimised support on the pelvis creates a more natural and comfortable sitting posture.
Driving Dynamics and Comfort
For driving performance, the updated CX-5 uses the latest SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architecture, the same vehicle structure technology that was introduced on the current Mazda3, to achieve dynamic performance that minimizes fatigue, even on long trips. Wow!
Driving dynamics, ride comfort and quality are improved. Updates include improvements to the damping control structure and increased frame rigidity, helping to suppress vibrations and road noise. With a quieter cabin and improved ride comfort, drivers will feel more connected to the enjoyable driving experience.
Exterior Colour
Zircon Sand Metallic is an exterior colour that brings together both a feeling of the vehicle being a single, solid unit and a metallic three-dimensional look. This brand-new body colour harmonizes with its natural surrounds and has a hard-wearing, utilitarian look.
Utility
The boot space of the updated Mazda CX-5 has been increased by eliminating the height difference between the cargo area floor and the tailgate sill. Not only does this flat entranceway make loading and unloading of heavy goods far easier, it also secures an even wider flat space when the rear seat is folded down.
Mazda CX-5 Akera
The flagship Akera model received most of the changes. Targeting customers that seek a distinctive, fun-to-drive vehicle, the updated Akera delivers a sportier interpretation with gloss black detailing on the bumper, wheel arches, side mouldings, door mirrors, signature wing and larger dual tailpipes. Subtle red accents in the grille, a larger tail pipe and 19-inch black metallic alloy wheels finish the sporty look. In the interior, black leather seats feature red stitching, which is also found around the cabin in areas like armrest, steering wheel, gear level, console lid and knee pads. Black film on dashboard and door panels, as well as black pillars and ceiling complement the distinctive look.
